Flat Feet vs High Arches in Kids: What's the Difference

Parents often notice their child's arch (or lack of one) during bathtime, at the beach, or when buying new shoes. Some children leave flat, wide footprints. Others have a noticeable curve under the foot that barely touches the ground. Both patterns raise questions, and the answers are different for each one.


Flat feet vs high arches kids present with are two very different foot types, and they affect movement, shoe fit, and alignment in distinct ways. In my 15 years working with children's posture and foot development, I have assessed hundreds of kids on both ends of the arch spectrum. Most fall somewhere in the normal range and need nothing more than awareness and good footwear. But knowing what you are looking at helps you make smarter decisions and avoid unnecessary worry. Here is what separates these two conditions and what each one means for your child.


What Flat Feet Look Like in Children


A flat foot has little to no visible arch when the child stands barefoot on a hard surface. The entire sole of the foot contacts the ground, and the inner ankle often tilts slightly inward. If you look at your child's wet footprint on a bathroom floor, a flat foot leaves a complete print with no indentation on the inner edge.


Flat feet are extremely common in young children. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that nearly all babies and toddlers appear to have flat feet because a thick fat pad covers the developing arch. Between ages 3 and 6, the arch typically forms as the fat pad thins and the foot muscles strengthen through walking and running.


There are two types of flat feet. Flexible flat feet (by far the most common) show an arch when the child sits or stands on tiptoe, but the arch disappears under body weight. Rigid flat feet show no arch in any position, which is much less common and may need professional assessment. Most children with flexible flat feet experience no pain or functional issues. Their feet work well, they run and play without limitations, and their arches may continue to develop into their school-age years. When flat feet do cause problems, the signs include foot or ankle pain after activity, shoes wearing down unevenly on the inner edge, or reluctance to participate in physical play.

What High Arches Look Like in Children


High arches (also called pes cavus) are the opposite of flat feet. The arch is unusually tall, creating a large gap between the sole of the foot and the ground when standing. A wet footprint from a high-arched foot shows only the heel, the ball of the foot, and a narrow strip (or nothing) connecting them along the outer edge.


High arches children feet display are less common than flat feet in the pediatric population. According to research published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, about 10 to 15 percent of the population has high arches, and the condition has a strong hereditary component. If one or both parents have high arches, their children are more likely to develop them as well.


A high arch creates the opposite problem from flat feet. Instead of the foot being too flexible and collapsing inward, the high-arched foot is often too rigid and does not absorb shock well. The body weight concentrates on the heel and ball of the foot instead of distributing across the entire sole. This can lead to calluses in those areas, ankle instability (because the foot tends to roll outward rather than inward), and discomfort during high-impact activities like running and jumping.


Children with high arches may also have tighter calf muscles and Achilles tendons, which can affect their gait and make them more prone to ankle sprains. Unlike flat feet, which often improve with age, high arches tend to be a more permanent structural feature.


Flat Feet vs High Arches: Key Differences Parents Should Know


Understanding the flat feet high arches difference kids exhibit helps parents make better decisions about footwear, activities, and when to seek professional guidance. Here are the main distinctions:


  • Arch shape: Flat feet have a low or absent arch. High arches have an excessively tall arch. Both are variations from the typical mid-range arch height.

  • Common direction of rolling: Flat feet tend to overpronate (roll inward). High arches tend to supinate (roll outward).

  • Age pattern: Flat feet are common in toddlers and often resolve by age 6 to 8. High arches are typically structural and do not change significantly with age.

  • Pain locations: Flat feet pain usually appears on the inner ankle and arch area. High arches pain typically shows up on the ball of the foot, the heel, or the outer ankle.

How Each Foot Type Affects Posture and Movement in Kids


The foot is the base of the body's alignment chain. Whatever happens at the foot travels upward through the ankle, knee, hip, and spine. Both flat feet and high arches can affect posture, but in different ways.


Children with flat feet often show inward ankle collapse, which can lead to knock knees, inward hip rotation, and a tendency toward rounded posture. The kinetic chain shifts inward. I see this pattern regularly in the children I work with, and targeted flat feet exercises can help strengthen the muscles that support the arch and improve overall alignment.


Children with high arches often show outward ankle tilting, which can lead to bowlegged appearance, tight calves, and a rigid walking pattern. The kinetic chain shifts outward. These children may appear to walk on the outside edges of their feet, and they can be less stable on uneven surfaces.


In both cases, the foot type does not automatically mean there is a problem. Many children with flat feet or high arches move perfectly well and have no symptoms. The key is whether the foot type is causing pain, limiting activity, or creating visible alignment issues elsewhere in the body. Understanding your child's foot development by age gives you the context to know what is typical for their stage.


What Parents Can Do for Flat Feet and High Arches


For Children with Flat Feet


  • Encourage barefoot time on varied surfaces. Walking on grass, sand, and gravel activates the small muscles that support the arch. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes daily.

  • Practice arch-strengthening exercises. Towel scrunches, marble pickups, heel raises, and the Short Foot exercise all target the muscles that help form and maintain the arch.

  • Choose shoes with a firm heel counter. The back of the shoe should cup the heel firmly to prevent excessive inward rolling. Avoid shoes that are completely flat and floppy.

  • Avoid over-correcting. Most flat feet in children under 6 are normal developmental patterns. Orthotics should only be considered if a specialist recommends them based on pain or significant dysfunction.


For Children with High Arches


  • Focus on calf and Achilles stretching. Tight calves are common with high arches. Gentle wall stretches held for 20 to 30 seconds, done twice daily, can help maintain ankle mobility.

  • Choose shoes with good cushioning. High arches need more shock absorption because the midfoot does not help distribute impact. Look for shoes with padded insoles. My guide on choosing the right shoes for kids covers this in detail.

  • Strengthen the ankle stabilizers. Single-leg balance, wobble board exercises, and lateral band walks help protect against the ankle sprains that high-arched children are more prone to.

  • Monitor for calluses and pain. If your child develops thick calluses on the heel or ball of the foot, or complains of foot pain during activity, those are signs that the arch may need additional support.

When to See a Specialist About Your Child's Foot Arch


Most children with flat feet or high arches do not need medical intervention. But certain signs indicate that professional evaluation would be helpful:


  • Your child complains of persistent foot, ankle, or knee pain during or after physical activity.

  • One foot looks significantly different from the other in arch height or shape.

  • Your child avoids running, jumping, or walking long distances because their feet hurt.

  • Your child is over 6 and shows rigid flat feet (no arch visible even when sitting or on tiptoe).

  • Your child's shoes wear down very unevenly or wear out much faster than expected.

For high arches, professional guidance is most helpful when the child experiences pain or has difficulty finding comfortable shoes. A podiatrist or pediatric orthopedic specialist can evaluate the foot structure and recommend the right approach, whether that is exercises, footwear changes, or in rare cases, custom orthotics.
